The programme works to improve health and quality of life for Travellers by finding out what the community actually needs, then helping people get to the right services.
Community led
Traveller Community Health Workers shape the work from the community’s own values, experience and priorities.
Health promotion
Prevention, information, screening awareness and practical health supports, in plain language.
Signposting
Linking families to screening, support, early intervention and the right service or agency.
Practical help
Food Cloud, Period Dignity and support for older people, including help linking in with home help.
Groups and activities.
Most of the work happens through regular groups where people can drop in, meet others and pick things up as they go.
Women’s Group
Sewing, knitting, flower making and time together. The group knits hats for premature babies for Galway hospital.
Connect Café
A relaxed space for connection, mental health promotion and a chat with people who understand.
Movement and wellbeing
Aqua fit, swimming lessons and rebounder classes, building confidence as much as fitness.
Traveller culture workshops
Culture and identity work, including Beady Pockets and workshops delivered in local schools.
Getting the right information, early.
Prevention and clear information help people get to services sooner and understand the choices in front of them.
Screening and prevention
Breast check awareness, bowel cancer awareness, immunisation information and blood pressure checks.
Parents and babies
Breastfeeding information sessions and links into maternity services and Brighter Beginnings.
Training
Paediatric first aid, manual handling, fire safety and driver theory, open to the community.
Working with services
Links with Galway County Council, maternity and mental health services, GRD and local supports.
